Misfits - Walk Among Us
The debut of horror-punk legends, the Misfits, will either leave you wanting more due to satisfaction, or make you wonder why people even like them.
Misfits are made up of the legendary Glenn Danzig on vocals who can be best described as a cross between Joey Ramone and Elvis Presley, from his ability to rev crowds up with his energy to his ability to sing the devil's blues to relax them. Following him are the brothers Jerry Only and Doyle Wolfgang von Frankenstein on bass and guitar, respectively, and Arthur Groogy pounding on the drums. They were formed in 1977.
Sure, the boys at Misfits look tough and they could probably kill you in a fight, but they aren't singing about killing anyone or Satan or anything their image could imply. Instead they take major influence from horror b-movies. For those unaware, think of some of the worst and cheesiest movies you can think of. You can see this very well in the lyrics of "I Turned Into a Martian" and "Astro Zombies". Glenn Danzig was also an avid comic book fan and you can also see this in their music.
The songs may not catch you the first time, the second time, or maybe even the third time, but if they ever do, they catch you and they don't let go. Their music is fast and aggressive, but it's also catchy. They're all about having fun, with friends or without. Glenn even structured many of the choruses so it's easy to sing along with him.
What brings this down, simply, is the production. Many of the songs sound like they were recorded in a garage or a bad studio. Whether that adds to the music depends on you, but I like being able to hear the bass, where as it's very rare when you can hear it on this album.
Your mileage will definitely vary, but I give this about a 6/10. Some songs are great, but the production brings it down.
