Mike G - Mike Check

As you've probably noticed by now, I love the hip-hop collective OFWGKTA. I love a good deal of their music, and just their personalities within their music, from Tyler, The Creator's aggressive and depressive explicit lyrics, to Domo Genesis' laid back personality and songs about weed, I just personally love them all because they're great people, and they've got talent. They're just a lot of fun for me to listen to. So now it's time to move onto possibly the least seen rapper in the collective, due to how laid back and mellow he is, even moreso than Domo Genesis, and to be honest, not that unique of a name. Mike G is out to make a name for himself.

ofwgkta, odd future, wolf gang, golf wang, mike g, mike checkMike G has the smoothest voice out of the group, outside of the singers in the group. He at times sounds like a young Snoop Dogg, and occasionally actually looks the part. In Mike G's lyrics, you won't find the aggression of Tyler or the rapist tendencies of Earl Sweatshirt. Mike G is laid back, rapping about family, friends, life, and the sort, just trying to get through it, over some calm beats.

I'm gonna try to cut to the chase with this one. While I am a fan of Mike G, I think he's a really cool guy, he's even on my Facebook friends list, I'm not the hugest fan of his solo work. Not because he's bad, which he isn't at all, it just seems a bit of his music fades into the background for me. If you can get into calm hip-hop, there's a good chance you'll like him, but as for me, I just mainly like the guy when he's on other people's songs. If he's on a song by Tyler or Hodgy, or just collaborating with anyone from the collective, that's great, I like to hear that, but I can't really get into this. Nothing about this is really bad, just not my kind of thing. Although hearing him rap over the beat of Kid CuDi's 'Day N Nite' was kind of interesting.

Another thing, the production is a bit bad at times. The vocals sounded like they were recorded on bad microphones at times, because you can hear Mike and his guests breathe at points. Only minor things though.

4/10
