The Dillinger Escape Plan - Irony Is A Dead Scene

What is there really to say about this EP? Three words. It's friggin' awesome. For those unaware of who The Dillinger Escape Plan are, they are a band classified as a 'mathcore' band. Mathcore is very fast and technical metal. And it works for them. On this EP, they're joined by vocalist Mike Patton, famous vocalist for many bands, such as Faith No More, Mr. Bungle, and Fantômas, just to name a few of many. And he just rocks at vocals in this.

The EP is only four tracks, and that's a shame, because there are some gems to be found here. But here comes the review.

The first track is "Hollywood Squares". Right from the start it's hectic and loud as anything. Leading into some breakdowns. It isn't the best track, but it was the best way to open the album.

The second track is "Pig Latin". This song really is strange with the lyrics, with some lyrics being "(CHINGA!) Your mother. (CHINGA!) Your father. (CHINGA!) And that thing under the covers.", with some speculating about what the song really is about. The chorus is strong, and it is a good song.

The third track is "When Good Dogs Do Bad Things", which I consider the highlight of the album. It begins with Mike Patton screaming "I'm the best you'll ever have!", and leads into the most epic song on the album, going through many changes.

The final track is an Aphex Twin cover, "Come To Daddy", it's good and all, but it really isn't anything worth writing home about. The cover's interesting, just nothing you'd probably put on intentionally. Just kind of like one of those tracks you'd listen to when listening to the full album. It has a nice feel to it, though, and it ends the EP pretty smoothly.

Overall, I'd give it perhaps a 7.5 out of 10. Mike's vocals are awesome, and the band is great, but only four songs brings it down. Maybe sometime in the future we can see a bigger album done together by them?
