Domo Genesis - Rolling Papers

Domo Genesis is yet another member of the hip-hop collective OFWGKTA. While as some of the other members talk about killing people, raping people, and other demented stuff they find funny, Domo Genesis is laid back, only choosing to rap about subjects like smoking weed (obviously), eating cereal, and getting into epic fights in the middle of super markets with a jedi.

Yep.

domo genesis, rolling papers, ofwgkta, odd future, wolf gang, golf wang, swag, weedSome people love this album, and I'll tell you right now that I don't. Domo's voice is nasally, and as such, for me, I cannot enjoy it in large doses. And even then, his flow and lyrics really aren't that great, so every time a guest appears on this album, such as Tyler, The Creator (credited as Wolf Haley and Ace Creator), Hodgy Beats, and Mike G, they always steal the track from Domo without even trying, because they'd never try to out-do one of their best friends on his own album.

I believe it was Tyler who made the beats and production for this album, which is good, because the beats actually sound good, it's just that Domo can't carry them along. If some of these beats were given to someone else, like Earl Sweatshirt, they'd be carried a lot better.

That's not to say there aren't some stand-outs on here, such as the title track 'Rolling Papers', and 'Super Market', but they're only stand-out, sadly, because of Tyler's guest appearances on them, although 'Super Market' has some good lines from Domo, as they both engage in a battle-rap about being in a super market (Surprise!) and someone cutting in line. A few words are exchanged, it gets more intense, with Tyler calling Domo a "Fat fake Kenan Thompson" and Domo accusing Tyler of turning girls into lesbians. The battle gets hotter with Domo declaring himself to be a samurai, ready to cut Tyler in half, and Tyler reveals himself to be a ninja-Jedi. One thing leads to another, Tyler ends up fleeing on his evil walrus named Rufus, and Domo turns into a zombie.

Domo smoked a lot while making this album, as you can probably tell.

When I think of OFWGKTA, I don't think of Domo, and in a way, it feels like at times he doesn't even belong, although that can be said about a few other members that I actually find to be good, like Frank Ocean. And although he's gotten better since he made this album, I still don't really care him all that afterwards. Maybe his next album will change my opinion on him.

Overall, a few parts got me to smile, but other than that, I don't really care for this album much at all. It's not really that terribly bad, because I enjoyed a track or two, but this just isn't clicking with me.

5/10
