Trend alert: cameos - the new earrings
It looks as though Lanvin designer Alber Elbaz has been hitting the art history books, as he backs the cameo in a big way. Simon Chilvers approves
Alber Elbaz's pre-fall Lanvin collection has a big role for cameos.
The pre-fall 2012 collections are still being unveiled – these are the clothes that will fill the gap on shop floors between the spring/summer catwalk looks and the autumn/winter ones. Note: those autumn/winter ones will be shown on catwalks internationally from next month.
With 10 years of service at the Parisian house of Lanvin, Alber Elbaz has unveiled his pre-fall offering and declared the cameo back. His first outfit – a white blouse with black skirt – was duly decorated with a matching monochrome cameo hanging on a silk ribbon. These jewellery details also appeared at the neck of a roomy coat and pinned above the bust of a black sleeveless dress.
Earrings have dominated fashion as the headline jewellery statement in recent seasons, but has Elbaz kick-started a pendant/brooch revival? We're not entirely sure but we do love an art reference and cameos are very Manet …
