Bentley: 'SUV has to change'

The Falcon’s styling met with a mixed reception at Geneva, although, significantly, few showgoers questioned whether an SUV was right for Bentley.

This design — born in the era of current CEO Wolfgang Dürheimer — departs from a previous SUV proposal that was circulated internally at Bentley five or six years ago, one insider told Autocar.

There will be a major opportunity to tweak the styling as the design moves to production. The concept is two metres wide and needs to be narrowed to a more practical, real-world size.

But the most important critics will be potential customers — both existing Bentley owners and conquests — who will clinic the design immediately after the show.

Bentley is also considering developing its own V8-based plug-in hybrid to power the production car.

The new powertrain would borrow from the Volkswagen Group’s MLB longitudinal engine platform and promises strong headline figures for CO2 emissions and fuel economy.

Much of the hybrid technology has already been developed for the Porsche Cayenne and VW Touareg and mated to a V6 supercharged petrol engine. But the V6 is seen as lacking the power and image required for the imposing Falcon.

“That’s one of the benefits to Bentley of being in the group: we can borrow technology as we want,” said one insider.

Inside, the Falcon has been designed to maximise visibility for the driver. The dashboard is set low and the seating position relatively high — 50mm higher than in a Cayenne — to give a Range Rover-like view over the expansive bonnet.

The small-diameter steering wheel, borrowed from the Continental GT, was chosen to lend a sporty feel. There’s air suspension, but no low-ratio gearbox. A controller in the cabin allows the selection of off-road settings tailored for sand, rocks, mud and snow, which use pre-selected programmes for the traction control and air suspension. Insiders reckon that electronic aids can give enough off-road performance without resorting to a low-ratio ’box.

Peugeot/Citroën slash EV prices

Peugeot and Citroën have slashed the price of the Peugeot iOn and Citroën C-Zero electric vehicles by £6939 to £21,216 (including the government’s £5000 plug-in car grant).

Both firms have also confirmed that the availability of both cars will be improved; Citroën will ramp up sales of its C-Zero from 11 dealerships to 21, while the iOn will be sold in 23 Peugeot dealerships.

Both firms have also introduced new contract hire rates, which cost from £249 per month, based over three years and 30,000 miles.

The iOn and C-Zero electric pair are powered by a rear-mounted 64bhp electric motor, while the 88-cell, 16kWh lithium ion battery pack is mounted under the centre of the vehicle. They take six hours to charge from a domestic socket and will do 93 miles in free-flowing traffic with the air-con turned off. A crowded city with the air-con blowing will reduce that range to around 46 miles.

From 2013, Peugeot and Citroën will introduce electric vans into their ranges. Both the Peugeot Partner electric van and Citroen electric Berlingo van will be available with the government’s maximum £8000 EV grant.

Facelifted Audi Q5 spied

A facelifted version of the Audi Q5 has been spied almost completely undisguised during testing ahead of its expected launch at the Paris motor show in September. The five-door SUV, which was introduced in 2009, is currently being mildly tweaked to bring it into line with the newer Audi Q3.

See spy pictures of the Audi Q5 facelift

Our spy photographers caught two development models: a black Audi Q5 fitted with the plush S-line trim package and a red version of the SUV, which is the standard Q5.

These pictures reveal the new large single-frame six-corner front grille, which is the same shape as the one featured on the brand-new Audi A3 unveiled at the Geneva motor show earlier this month. The Q5 also gets Audi’s latest ‘boomerang’ LED daytime running lights design and a new bumper treatment at the front and rear.

The Q5 is expected to get some new engine variations when it goes on sale in early 2013.

TONY STEWART HITS JACKPOT IN VEGAS

It took 27 races for Tony Stewart to find Victory Lane in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series last year. Four additional wins followed in the remaining nine weeks and Stewart earned his third Cup championship in one of the more dramatic finales in the sport’s history.

Stewart made it known on Sunday at Las Vegas Motor Speedway that his No. 14 team will not only be a force in the Chase, but in NASCAR’s 26-race regular season, as well. Stewart dominated the Kobalt Tools 400, leading a race-high 127 laps, holding off all challengers through three restarts in the final 34 laps to score his first win of the 2012 season.

“It seemed like if we could get six or eight laps under our belt, we could start building that margin out again,” Stewart said of leading the field in the closing laps. “As soon as you started pulling away, the caution would come out again. You hate having to reset it like that, knowing for the first three laps you had to be spot on and not let them take advantage of a restart like that.

“You sit there and go, ‘How many times are we going to risk losing this race because of a restart? Something is going to get taken away from us because of this.’ It's very nerve-wracking.”

Stewart’s eventual race-winning move came on the first of the final three restarts. When the green flag waved with 34 laps remaining, Stewart, lined up in row three, shot his car to the tri-oval apron and around Brad Keselowski for the lead in Turn 1.

“The big thing was, that was when Matt (Kenseth) and Jimmie (Johnson) had taken four tires and we had taken two. We knew if we could clear those guys, it would give us a little bit of a buffer and have some lap cars that would keep them occupied. We didn't know we were going to have three or four restarts after that. It was key to get out front right away and try and build a gap.”

Johnson held on for second, his second straight top-5 finish after a disappointing 42nd in the Daytona 500. Greg Biffle inherited the lead in the point standings with his third consecutive third-place run. Ryan Newman and Carl Edwards rounded out the top 5.

The win was notable for Stewart in that it was his first career Cup triumph as Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Darlington Raceway and Kentucky Speedway (which was added to the Cup schedule last season) are the only two active tracks where Stewart has yet to notch a Cup win.

“I take a lot of pride in being good in different types of cars, at least being competitive in different types of cars, being competitive at different racetracks,” Stewart said. “This is one we've been close a couple times and it got away. To finally check this off the list … that's what makes today so special — not so much the time of year we're getting it, just the fact we finally got this one.”

Encouraging run for Earnhardt  Dale Earnhardt Jr. started second in the Kobalt Tools 400. By the exit of Turn 2, he wrested the lead from teammate Kasey Kahne and held it for the next 43 laps. So dominant was his Chevy that Earnhardt chose to not report a tight condition on his car because the speed was so good.

“Knowing how it drove that first run, even though it was really fast, we should have worked on it and I should have told Steve (Letarte, crew chief) more about it,” Earnhardt said. “I should have let him understand what was going on.”

The car tightened up further once in traffic, and he was never able to fight back to the point. He finished 10th. Still, his 70 laps led bested the 52 he led in the entirety of the 2011 season.

Watch what you say  Brad Keselowski saw a good run go bad when his car appeared to run out of fuel on a restart with 17 laps remaining while running second.

Keselowski was fined last year for criticism of NASCAR’s new Electronic Fuel Injection system.

“We're not doing this because it's better for the teams,” Keselowski said in November. “I don't think we're really going to save any gas. It's a media circus, trying to make you guys happy so you write good stories. It gives them something to promote. We're always looking for something to promote, but the honest answer is it does nothing for the sport except cost the team owners money.

“Cars on the street are injected with real electronics, not a throttle body (like in NASCAR). So we've managed to go from 50-year-old technology to 35-year-old technology. I don't see what the big deal is.”

Following the 32nd-place finish in Vegas, Keselowski took to Twitter, noting that the problem he experienced was not an empty gas tank, but a lack of fuel being delivered to the engine: “Just to be clear. On the last restart the engine ran out of fuel, the fuel tank still had gas. This means the fuel system had a problem.”

Play nice, teammates  Roush Fenway Racing teammates Matt Kenseth and Carl Edwards may need to have a meeting of the minds before drivers take the gloves off at Bristol.

Edwards dove beneath Kenseth on the race’s final restart with four laps remaining while both ran in the top 5. The move put Kenseth in a precarious middle-lane position as the bunched-up field maneuvered through Turns 1 and 2. Kenseth’s car broke loose on corner exit and sideswiped the wall. Edwards drove on to a fifth-place finish while the damage dropped Kenseth to 22nd.

“Carl just laid back and got me three-wide, and it just didn’t seem there was a lot of room getting into (Turn) 1,” Kenseth said. “And then I did get clear behind him and he just stopped in the middle of the corner. I don’t really know what happened.”

“Matt spun his tires a little bit (on the restart) and I got a run on him, “Edwards explained. “And then Greg (Biffle) and I went around him and he ended up getting wrecked. I feel terrible.”

NASCAR HORSEPOWER RANKINGS

1. Greg Biffle  Biffle’s team was the one under the Roush Fenway banner that laid low during the offseason. The result has been third-place finishes across the board. Bristol is usually good to them, too.

2. Jimmie Johnson  It’s highly unlikely Chad Knaus’ appeal is overturned, but by appealing, Hendrick Motorsports bought Johnson a pair of top-5 finishes. Win or lose with the committee, this team remains a lock for the Chase.

3. Denny Hamlin  We’ll take the 20th-place finish at Vegas as a hiccup. Although, after fourth- and first-place runs at Daytona and Phoenix, the dip at an intermediate track was notable.

4. Tony Stewart  “Hey Darian, anything you can do, I can do better!” One week after Stewart’s former pit boss earned his first win with Hamlin, Stewart and new boss Steve Addington even the score.

5. Kevin Harvick  Worst finish so far this season is 11th. Harvick and the re-tooled No. 29 team have an uncanny knack for always being “there.” A couple wins in the next month or so could be on tap.

6. Matt Kenseth  Kenseth was on the business end of a Carl Edwards late-race move once again. For some reason, those never work out too well for the 2003 champ.

7. Carl Edwards  “The Aggressor” raced on to a fifth-place finish, his second top 10 of the year. Strangely, Edwards has yet to lead a lap this season. Is another hangover in store for last season’s championship runner-up?

8. Mark Martin  Says he’s OK with Dale Earnhardt Jr. after their dust-up in Vegas. The odds of anything spilling over to Bristol would have already been long — and those odds are off the board since Martin won’t even run there.

9. Dale Earnhardt Jr.  The dominating run in the first half of the Vegas race was encouraging, but fading to 10th was all-too-familiar. Bristol should be another top-10 performance, though.

10. Kyle Busch  “Rowdy” is ranked here more on 2012 potential than 2012 accomplishment. Bristol may change that.

11. Joey Logano  So far, so good for the new Logano/Jason Ratcliff pairing. Wonder if he’ll be looking for the 24 this weekend?

12. Brad Keselowski  A fifth is sandwiched between two 32nd-place finishes. Again, potential/accomplishment. And again, that could change this weekend.

13. Paul Menard  Has quietly enjoyed two top-7 runs at Daytona and Vegas. He was fifth in last year’s spring Bristol race.

14. Martin Truex Jr.  If this team ever learns how to finish a race, it’ll be dangerous.

15. Marcos Ambrose  An excellent Bristol darkhorse, Ambrose has three top 10s in six Cup Series starts.

Just off the lead pack: Clint Bowyer, Jeff Burton, Jeff Gordon, Kasey Kahne, Ryan Newman

THE LONG AND SHORT OF IT: NNS RENAISSANCE, GORDON'S FLIP & BABY OTIS

Have you noticed the oddity already taking place in NASCAR this season?

Don’t see it?

Look at the Nationwide Series where all three races have been won by drivers not competing full time in Cup this year.

James Buescher won at Daytona, points leader Elliott Sadler at Phoenix and defending series champion Ricky Stenhouse Jr. at Las Vegas last weekend.

Consider that only six of 34 Nationwide races last year were won by drivers not competing in Cup full time. In 2010, only one race was won by a Nationwide regular not competing in Cup.

The odds are likely that the current streak will end this weekend at Bristol. Kyle Busch has won the last three Nationwide races there and is entered, along with Cup drivers Kevin Harvick, Brad Keselowski, Kasey Kahne, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Joey Logano.

Still, a tide is turning.

Sadler, who did not win a race but finished second in the points in 2011, is excited about his chances of winning multiple races this year.

“I feel like when we show up every week, we’re going to be very, very fast,” he said. “We’re going to haul butt at Bristol. They’re taking my favorite car. It’s neat to have this confidence in this race and it’s neat this race team has this confidence in me.”

Others can relate.

The first three races show what the Nationwide Series can become a way to showcase its drivers, particularly the younger ones. Buescher is 21, Stenhouse is 24.

It’s not just them having success.

Look at what 20-year-old Cole Whitt and 21-year-old Austin Dillon have done so far.

Whitt was fourth at Daytona, 13th at Phoenix and sixth at Las Vegas. Dillon was fifth at Daytona, fourth at Phoenix and seventh at Las Vegas. They’re the favorites for the rookie of the year title and, based on how they started the season, could make that an interesting race.

It’s already been quite a start to the season for Whitt, who might be better known as the driver who bumped teammate Danica Patrick at Daytona, causing her to wreck. He hit the wall during qualifying at Las Vegas, but the team repaired it instead of going to a backup.

“I didn’t want to start that way with Danica,” Whitt said. “I messed up. Hopefully, over time I can earn that respect back from them. That, obviously, put a lot of limelight on us, a lot more than I wanted. Obviously, I felt a little bit of the pressure. Hopefully, with a clean race (at Las Vegas) and run as good as we did, we keep pulling those off and earn the respect of the veterans.”

The challenge for the series, though, remains, finding a way to make it affordable for teams to provide younger drivers quality rides. That’s not easy in this economic climate, but that’s what it will take for the series to gain more attention and interest from fans.

HOLD ON TIGHT  Jeff Gordon was asked what it was like inside his car when it went upside down during his crash in Daytona. Gordon gave a detailed answer that I thought might give you a sense of what drivers experience in such a crash.

Here’s an edited version of what Gordon said:

“You hold on tight and you just hope that it ends soon. You hold onto the steering wheel, but you basically just brace yourself for any impact that may be coming. The one thing about when you are flipping upside down, you really don’t know what’s coming next because you can’t see. You’re spinning around and you’re seeing the sky and the track and the sky and the track and it’s all happening pretty fast.

“There are only a few split seconds through that whole experience where I was nervous. One was when I was sliding on the door. I was more concerned with if those sparks turn into fire and I need to get out, how am I going to go through the other window? I knew some cars had gotten into me and I thought the car might be stuck like that. That didn’t last for very long because I started flipping. Then I was like, ‘Please don’t land upside down.’ Then it landed upside down.

“When it landed upside down, everything was fine. I told the team I was fine, but now it’s like how am I going to get out? The longest part of that entire wreck was waiting for (rescue crews) to get to the window and going through the process of whether or not we should flip it over or not. That seemed like it took forever and I wish I would have waited longer because I wanted to get out in a hurry and they wanted to wait and flip the car over.

“I wish I had waited because I tried to get out and that was the only time I was scared. I was stuck inside the car when I tried to unhook. That was the part that wasn’t much fun. As far as coping with it, maybe it’s just the mentality you have to have to be a race car driver. I was ready to get back in the car as fast as I possibly could and go out there and go race.”

1. This Batmobile Limousine

Well, Bruce Wayne is a billionaire. Why should he drive himself around? This Batmobile was spotted in New York City and was probably based on a Corvette.

The limo is inspired from the Batmobile that was featured in the 1989 and 1992 Batman films directed by Tim Burton. You can see more pictures of the Bat Mobile Limo as well as a video that we discovered on Youtube after the jump.

Aston Martin E-teuer Concept designed by Jack Allenet

Aston Martin E-teuer Concept designed by Jack Allenet
Aston Martin E-teuer Concept designed by Jack Allenet
What to expect in the future from an eminent brand that James Bond drives? The answer is ‘pretty’ much present in the above image. Exquisitely conceptualized by Jack Allenet, this is the Aston Martin E-teuer. Adroitly futuristic in its demeanor, gracefully curvaceous in its ‘racing’ body and arduously elegant in its overall form; this electric car certainly has it all. Supposedly inspired by the British automaker’s achievements at the renowned Le Mans track; the designer wanted to infuse that sublime essence of speed and style, albeit with dollops of sustainability.

The striking visual element aside, the conception has also been envisaged to exhibit an exhilarating level of performance. Zealously propelled by a power output of 400kW and a convincing torque of 750nm, the vehicle can romp up to a blistering top speed of 300 km/hr. Moreover, being ‘fueled’ by the efficient and green KERS, the car could accelerate from 0-60 (0-100 km) in just under 3 seconds.

Coming to the lissome body, the energetic styling is influenced from a plethora of fascinating sports cars such as the Aston Martin DB9 and Vantage, and even racing conceptions like the Le Mans LMP1. The overall weight is just limited to 500kg, while the performance capability is boosted by E-tuer’s intrinsic aerodynamic form and efficacious suspension. The car also incorporates the notorious F-duct system, which helps in reducing aerodynamic drag with enhancement of substantial speed.

Finally coming to the innovative design feature, the maneuvering mechanism (in relation to the EV drive train) can be adjusted to cope up with different roads (and even climatic conditions). This inherent flexibility of the drive allows optimum user convenience regarding acceleration, top speed, traction control, active braking, and even engine mapping. So, all in all, the conception certainly manages to successfully fuse the progressive attributes of design, performance and style along with elements of low emission technology.

Electric Vehicles: BMW i Series Concept Cars

Electric Vehicles: BMW i Series Concept Cars
Electric Vehicles: BMW i Series Concept Cars: BMW just raised the stakes for electric vehicles by unveiling its new i Series concept cars. The runabout all-electric i3 is to debut in 2013, followed by the sporty i8 hybrid in 2014. Both 4-seaters push the boundaries of design and technology with advanced drivetrains and breakthrough carbon fiber bodies that shave weight to improve performance and mileage. Marking a milestone in the company’s vaunted lineup, the new cars will be exceptionally miserly on energy, but maintain a high performance credo. The more conventional i8 will have a 3.0 liter six-cylinder engine with a parallel electric motor to provide 349 horsepower. Using lightweight carbon fiber, the reduced weight allows the car to reach 60mph in a numbing 4.6 second. The technology however still allows for a frugal 78 mpg – assuming you’re not a lead foot. The car can also go 22 miles running just on its electric motor, much like the Chevy Volt.

The i3 is even more unique. Built on an all-electric powertrain for an urban environment, the car can go 98 miles with full batteries, and can charge up 80% in an hour. The curb weight comes in at 600 pounds less than the Nissan Leaf, given its carbon fiber body, and a full 2 feet shorter to help navigate the urban maze. The i3 is the first production car in the world to use carbon fiber technology at this level. Powered by a 125kW electric motor the car can do 0-60mph in a respectable 7.9 seconds. Carbon fiber components combined with advanced drivetrains were first proposed in the early 1990s by the Rocky Mountain Institute as the “Supercar”, and was essentially ignored by the industry due to low gasoline prices.

Ferrari Modulo Revival | Car Design

Ferrari Modulo Revival | Car Design
Many would simply fling their eyebrows high when told that the original Ferrari 512 S Module by Pinninfarina was actually unveiled at the 1970 Geneva Auto Show. And now after 40 years, the modernistic version of this already futuristic car is back to tickle our sci-fi senses albeit in a more sustainable manner. Though strictly at a conceptual stage, this remarkably avant-garde conception was contrived by a design team of Emmanuel Laffon de Mazieres and Bastien Petelot.

Infused with a sleek demeanor, classy bearing and a fervently innovative technology, the Ferrari Modulo of the 21st Century will certainly be a supercar to behold. The inconspicuous wheels will be ’sunk in’ within the body frame like the original design; supposedly, for enhancement of rolling efficiency and airflow. On the other hand, the improved (if we daresay that) styling is quite evident from the roof of this version, which completely incorporates a swanky glass facade (in comparison to the original 70’s model). The linearity of the astute form along the measured edges have been specifically dealt with to accentuate upon the aerodynamic quality of the car.

According to the designer:

“Everything on this car is designed around aerodynamism and reduced rolling resistance. The extremely low profile, the controlled airflow, the sharp back-end edge help reduce drag and improve performance.”

Now coming to the part that interests us Ecofriend folks, the fascinating supercar will actually flaunt an all-electric engine that alludes to the very low emission side of affairs. So, if we ever get a chance to roll around the city blocks in this ultra-futuristic green monster, we would gleefully accept it with our bowing heads.
