OFWGKTA - Odd Future Tape

ofwgkta, odd future tape, odd future, golf wang, wolf gang, tyler the creator, hodgy beats, casey veggies
A hip-hop collective out of California. All seen and heard before, right? OFWGKTA is far from it. OFWGKTA stands for 'Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All', and their full name is, prepare your tender Christian eyes, Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All Don’t Give A Fuck Litter Life Bacon Boys Loiter Squad Butt Fuck Bitch Niggas, but they're commonly just referred to as Odd Future.

I don't censor things anymore since you can already guess what astericks are hiding.

And yes, they do make a point to try to offend whoever listens to their albums. Those easily offended should stay away, because OFWGKTA talk about everything from simply having fun with friends to killing cops, to killing themselves, to raping women. But no matter what they say, they're always clever about it, and there's a certain amount of humor in every song, no matter how dark the matter is. Comparisons to Wu-Tang Clan and other famous hip-hop groups have been made, with some people even calling OFWGKTA the future of hip-hop.

And in a way, I hope they're right.

OFWGKTA on this album, are made up of Tyler, The Creator, Hodgy Beats, Left Brain, Casey Veggies, and The Super 3. Left Brain and The Super 3 typically stick to producing and beat making, while Tyler, Hodgy, and Casey take over vocals. Tyler goes by three aliases on this album, as 'Tyler, The Creator', 'Ace Creator', and simply 'Ace', possibly to show different sides of his personality.

I figure I'll go into more of OFWGKTA as a whole. After this album, Casey Veggies left OFWGKTA, and OFWGKTA got more members, bringing their member list to:

Tyler, The Creator
Earl Sweatshirt
Hodgy Beats
Frank Ocean
Syd Tha Kyd
Taco
Jasper Dolphin
Left Brain
The Super 3
Mike G
Domo Genesis

I will go more into detail with each member when the time comes to review their solo albums. Also, that's just their musical members. They have over 60 members in total, but the rest are just skateboarders, graffiti artists, etc.

I'll say this: OFWGKTA on later releases are great. But on this album, while they are kind of good, production brings this one down. What's with debut albums by good artists being kinda bad? I don't know.

Another thing bringing this down is the fact that Tyler's voice hadn't deepened to the dark and raspy voice all Odd Future fans are used to, and their flows aren't that terribly great. Also, while Casey Veggies is good in his own way, too much of the tape is given to him. Whenever it's just Hodgy and Tyler together, it's got some good moments, but when there are so many tracks given to Casey Veggies, it brings it down. And a lot of the tracks on this mixtape just aren't very memorable at all.

Sorry guys, you're great, but I'm just not feeling this.

5/10
